Genre: Short Story/Fiction/Romance/Military

Plot: Lodging — bending of the stalk of a plant (stalk lodging) or the entire plant (root lodging)

While World War II engulfs every nation on the globe, Rebecca and her high school friend Sarah can only dream of escaping a dreary, wind-blown existence in western Kansas, until their boring, stodgy old hometown fills with handsome young men learning to fly Army Air Corps bombers known as Liberators, and their lives are suddenly filled with temptation and, perhaps, true love.

Opinion: *Sigh*…such a bittersweet story to make me weak in the knees and sorrowful all at once. I am truly starting to adore reading short stories more and more.

This short story is told by Rebecca as she recounts her teenage years in Liberal, Kansas during World War II. Rebecca tells a story of working at a local diner during the summer as a favor to her mother, where she comes across a young Lieutenant named David King. As Rebecca spends her days filling orders and running around the diner, David stays in the lounge playing the piano until closing. Rebecca tells her story of her time with David and the effects that the flyboys had on her town that summer before they were shipped off to the war.

This short story is about 30 pages long, but MY OH MY is it a wonderful story. The writing is descriptive and the author executed the story flawlessly by making me want to devour this story. I find myself sitting here with a slight smile on my face as I recount the story I just read, even though it makes me sad more than anything else. I think this story shows a great representation of the young men that fought in WWII, giving the reader a glimpse at their hopes and fears as they prepared to be shipped off to the war. This story definitely pulls on your heartstrings and makes you hurt for the soldiers, as well as the many young woman that lost their companions or friends.

I HIGHLY recommend this read for anyone. If short stories aren’t really your thing, I suggest you give this one a try. There is nothing better than finding a story that can stir up some emotions in a reader. I only wish that this story could have been longer!

Can you say OBSESSION? This girl is psychotic, and I love her oh so much.

For those of you have read this book, can we all just take a minute to bask in that WTF moment between Rowan and Aelin where Rowan says that cringe-worthy sentence? You know the one. It involves using the word moan and turning my wondrous YA story into a borderline disturbing erotic novel, where I feel like I have interrupted a moment that I REALLY don’t want to be interrupting.

Someboodddyyy say AWK-ward?

What’s the last book you finished?

Obviously.

Favorite book you read this year?

It has to be Hatred Day and Emotions. These were both SUPER original and interesting reads, and I was hooked on them.

What genre have you read most this year?

Fantasy books for sure! I have become a sucker for anything involving royal courts and sword play!

What genre have you read least this year?

I would have to say romance or horror.

What genres do you want to read more of?

2015 and 2016 have been years where I have REALLY branched out of my normal comfort zone in regards to genre of books. I am pushing myself to become open to anything at this point.

Except erotica. Just no.

How many books have you read this year and what is your goal?

I don’t even want to know the low amount of books that I read in 2016, twas a hard year indeed. I want to read 100 books in 2017, or more. The more the merrier! My goal is to stay focused and become a reading machine. Goodbye social life, I don’t need you anyways!

What is the last book you bought?

I read A Series of Unfortunate Events years and YEARS ago, and to my dismay….*sigh*…I can barely even say it…I LOST THEM. Ugh…woe is me.

Who’s an author you’re hoping writes more?

51uxu0chm1l-_ac_us200_

This book….always this book. If Jay Asher could just write more stories like this, he would be probably my favorite writer. I know that another story of his called What Light was just released in October, but I have a feeling this isn’t going to be as captivating as Thirteen Reasons Why.

A few books your heart adores?

So as not to be a Repetitive Rebecca, I left out my books that are a series since I have already placed them above in a previous question.

These are some of my favorite books, so you might as well trust my judgment and put them in your TBR list if you haven’t already read them.

DEFINITELY get Whispers of Bedlam Asylum because guess what?! Yours truly  and my wonderful girl Annelise are in it. Oh yeah, I s**t you not ladies and gents. The wonderful Mark C. King gave us the esteemed pleasure of being written into this majestic little tale.  Just to make you want to get this even more, both our characters are stuck in an insane asylum together against their will…and I swear, we’re sane.

(Just look for the names Jenaca and Annelise 😉 )

What series’ coming conclusion makes you sad?

throne

(Uncontrollable tears) I don’t want it to ever end!!

What books are on your wish list?

There is like…over 300 books in my TBR list right now, so the above will have to suffice for now.

Disclaimer: This ARC copy was sent to me by the publisher, Clarion Books, via NetGalley for an honest review.

Genre: YA/Fantasy

Plot: Romance, intrigue, and plenty of action are woven into a rich and suspenseful narrative in this powerful YA fantasy. The mixed-race heroine Myra is a Flickerkin and can flicker (become invisible) at will. She hasn’t cultivated or revealed this ability, since Flickerkin are persecuted as potential criminals and spies. When invisible people become tricksters and then murderers, Myra’s Flickerkin heritage becomes a deadly secret, putting her relationship with the leader’s son—and her own life—in jeopardy. Loyalties shift and difficult choices are made before Myra understands who she wants to be.

Opinion: Oh hello, HELLO first review of 2017! Let’s start the year out with a nice review of a wonderful YA Fantasy story, complete with prejudices of people who can turn invisible and a world where segregation is number 1! WHEW! Positivity!

Having the Ability should have been fun, in another world, a child who could become invisible might play pranks on her parents, might sneak around with friends, might go ride the beasts in the dead of night. In another world, the Ability might have brought freedom and joy. But I was born in another world, I was born in the Upland, where the Ability was used as a weapon of war.

Myra, Flicker and Mist

One night after waking from a terrible nightmare at the age of 5, unable to see herself or be seen by her family, Myra learns that she can Flicker. Years before her existence, Myra learns of a race called Flicker Men had come to the island of Upland and bred with the Lefties who reside in the Left Eye; which in turn created a sub-race called the Flickerkin. Once a war began and the Flicker Men fled, this new sub-race of the Flicker Men discovered that they had inherited the gift of being able to become invisible, or as they call it “flicker”. From then on Lefties (pale, short and curvaceous) and Flickerkin are put into the Left Eye to be “contained”, while the Plats (dark skinned, tall and thin) are to live in New Heart City as the dominant race. For a Leftie to enter New Heart City, they are subjected to taking a painful test to ensure that they do not have the Ability. Somehow, Myra’s mother was able to enter New Heart City even though she is Flickerkin. With the threat of being thrown to the Waters for judgment, Myra is forced to never flicker again. Now much older, Myra and her fellow residents of New Heart City discover a threat of Flickerkin among them. Myra must fight to keep her secret hidden, and fight to protect those around her.

I was very VERY excited to be approved for this read via Netgalley (thanks Calrion Books), mostly because I have always had a dire yearning to possess the superpower of invisibility. *Sigh*…the thought of it makes my toes tingle with giddiness! ANYWAYS, this story is stuffed and gorged with tons of interesting elements to pull any reader in. Fantasy and romance, adventure and unruly segregation…it’s all here! I was so intrigued by the world that this author created, and I loved the positive and negative elements that made up the island of Upland. The history of the Flicker Men coming to the Island was touched on, but I would have enjoyed a better understanding of who these people were. I think some flashbacks or stories about the past would have been beneficial to the story, and would have given the race of Flickerkin more depth. The elements of Plats riding beasts in a competition against others was really interesting, and I would have LOVED to have read more and more about this. Thought the reader is given a few scenes where the plats and beasts are battling it out in a race, again…I need more background and history about the competition and the importance of it.

The characters fell a little flat for me, especially that of Myra. As our main strong female lead, I needed more personality and character from her…well…character. I didn’t connect with Myra as strongly as I would have liked, especially in a story that has such a creative world as this. She felt very one-dimensional to me. Developed, but not developed in a way where there would have been tears coming down my face if her or someone she loved perished in front of her. If I am reading a story that is written in 1st person point-of-view, then I want to feel like I am inside that character’s head and seeing things through their eyes. I need to know this character as if I AM them, not as if I am looking at them and observing them.

Though I think the author could have taken this creative world a step further, I think this story still turned out to be highly enjoyable. It seems that if a fantasy story isn’t as detailed and elaborate as one like Throne of Glass or Lord of the Rings, then readers seem to push it away and deem it incomplete. I actually really enjoyed this story and what the author offered, because sometimes a book that doesn’t go on and on in detail is a nice change. I recommend this to any of you YA/Fantasy lovers out there. It is something DIFFERENT and entertaining, which is what we are all looking for anyways right? Though I have my qualms with not getting enough background on some things, it is still a book that you can get lost it and love.
