About Me/Review Process/Star Rating

Hello Hello!

My name is Jen and I am a book reviewer, book blogger and book promoter. I have been running this blog for a few years now, and I am loving every minute of it! I am here to promote the work of hardworking authors and their amazing and imaginative stories. Though I cannot give every book a 5 star review, I do my best to be as honest and constructive as possible.

A little bit about me:

I am 28-year-old introverted extrovert living in Western United States, lurking through cemeteries and chugging black tea like my life depends on it. Reading is basically my life and I love getting lost in fictional worlds, but I also love tarot, tea leaf readings, plants, video games, hiking, exploring, following proto, swimming and anything that will frighten me. I love the gothic and dark aspects of life, but I’m the most smiley and happy goth you’ll ever encounter. It has been 5 years since I started this blog (wow!) and I was only interested in YA Contemporary and Fantasy. Now I read just about anything, especially thrillers and books that will rip my heart from my chest.

Reviewing Process for Authors:

If you would like me to review one of your books or a series, please go to my “Contact” section and send me an email. I naturally prefer hard copies, but will gladly accept Nook Ebook versions (.EPUB, .ACSM and .PDF) and Kindle Ebook versions (.MOBI).

I post all of my reviews on this website, and Amazon.com, Goodreads.com, BarnesandNoble.com, Facebook.com, Google+, Instagram, Bloglovin’.com, and Twitter.

When reviewing a book, I consider all elements of the story such as overall story-line/plot, writing style and structure, character development and descriptive/creative writing involved. Depending on the book, my reviews will focus on one aspect more than an another. In my reviews I take into account how effectively the author can grab my attention and if they can hold it, if I am able to connect with the characters, and if the story can affect my emotions at all.

Genre of books that I will read and review: I am open to any genre, except erotica. Though these are generally the books I accept, I am not opposed to branching out into something different. If your book doesn’t fall into one of these categories but you think I may enjoy it, feel free to email me.

Please feel free to email me for reviews or for any questions/comments.

Star Rating Guide:

My star ratings are very complicated guys, so bear with me (sarcasm). I might include half star ratings in a review, which plainly means that I was on the fence when it came to deciding.

1-star          – Could barely read it, DO NOT recommend.

2-stars          – Most aspects were negative, not recommended.

3-stars          – More positives than negatives, recommended.

4-stars          – Great and enjoyable read, highly recommenced!

  1. Hello Jenaca
I noticed your visit to BooknVolume today and, specifically, your interest in Dark Fey. Might I inquire if you find it intriguing enough to consider reviewing them for me? I do have a review request page on BnV and offer a Free Mobi copy in exchange for an honest review. Should you find yourself interested, and I hope you may be, please do let me know. Either way, it is nice to connect with you and I appreciate you stopping by 🙂

  2. Hi Jenaca: Thanks for visiting and following Bookshelf — written specifically for bibliophiles and curious people like yourself. We read to know that we are not alone; books are so important today — they take us on journeys beyond on our daily experience and help us develop empathy, to discover that we are more alike than we are different. The world would be better off if people read great literature, don’t you think? Cheers, Alex.

  3. You stopped by my blog, deartedandjody, today. I looked at your blog and found a slightly different perspective on editing (in your comments about how you review). Those comments are useful as I am self-editing my first story, Amanda7 while I write the second in what could end up being a series (at least three books). Thank you. I will visit from time to time.

  5. It’s generous of you to post reviews at all the top places – very few readers bother, but getting reviews is important so authors (esp new authors) can find readers, and readers can find good books. 🙂

  7. Hi! I see that you’ve become a follower on my blog, after reading the latest installment of my ongoing story, Through a Cat’s Eyes, the Story of Kabize Vipertree! Thank you! While I’m not going to ask for a review (and notably, I’m not following the instructions necessary to accomplish that…) I’m not going to stop you, either.

You may have noticed that I have quite a bit of stuff going on! First, and foremost, there’s the ongoing story. Secondly, there’s opinion-based articles and blogs about gaming. Thirdly, is the poetry I’ve written throughout my life. Finally, there’s the poetry of my first wife, who passed away in 2001, The Windows of My Soul.

I hope you enjoy what my site has to offer, and thanks again for becoming a follower!

  9. “I dearly love music, but silence is truly golden” – that is amazing. The personality in your reviews and bio is incredible. I appreciate the read and I look forward to reading more from you as well!
