Here are a few books that I have received and purchased in the last few weeks.

1. Surrender Your Sons by Adam Sass

Genre: YA/Contemporary/LGBT

Release Date: September 15, 2020

Available for Request on: Netgalley

This cover though, right?

Surrender Your Sons is about a young man who is thrown into a conversion therapy camp called Nightlight Ministries after coming out to his extremely religious mother. At the camp Connor learns quickly that there is more to the seemingly converted counselors and the odd camp director. He fights to find a way out and take his fellow campers with him, if only they can figure out how to take the camp down.

I had read a book a few years ago called The Dead Inside which is a memoir by Cyndy Drew Etler and documents her time at one of the scared-straight camps that were run by Straight, Inc. and hugely popular in the 80s and 90s. They were “tough love” camps that were riddled with abusive and bizarre acts of therapy. I am expecting Surrender Your Sons to be similar to this or the 2008 film Boot Camp starring Mila Kunis.

2. The Memories We Bury by H.A. Leuschel

Genre: Fiction/Contemporary

Release Date: April 17, 2020

H.A. Leuschel is an author I have read in the past, namely her collection of short stories called Manipulated Lives that I found to be incredibly raw. Helena has an uncanny ability to see the faults and darkness that is weaved into humanity, and she is able to portray them to the reader through a tale that feels realistic but also non-judgemental.

The Memories We Bury is her first novel and about a bond that forms between a new mother, her husband and her elderly neighbor. It highlights the motherly habits and traits that both Lizzie and her neighbor Morag have learned through personal experiences, and is a story of having to learn who to trust.

3. I Killed Zoe Spanos by Kit Frick

Genre: YA/Mystery/Thriller

Release Date: June 2, 2020

Available for Request on: Netgalley

I Killed Zoe Spanos is about a girl named Anna Cicconi who arrives in the Hamptons for a Summer job. Upon her arrival she learns of a girl that has been missing since New Years Eve – Zoe Spanos. As Anna learns more about Zoe, she is told by members of the community of her striking resemblance to Zoe, and she soon begins to wonder if they are linked in some way.

But then when Zoe’s body is finally found, Anna is charged with manslaughter with an alibi that doesn’t quite make sense.

The premise is giving me mad The Lies They Tell vibes, which I loved, so I am supper stoked to start this gem.

1. Hidden Bodies (You, Book 2) by Caroline Kepnes

Genre: Fiction/Mystery/Thriller

I have become horribly obsessed with Joe Goldberg.

He’s just a lover of words and YOU and only wants to get rid of the toxic shit from your life so you can excel and be happy, okay?

*sigh*…swoon.

Thankfully I had found not one, not two, but THREE other girls on Bookstagram who are equally infatuated and understanding of Joe’s murderous ways (@_Shelikestoread , @Heyyitsfahh , @book_and_jane). But only one of us has ever read the books, so we agreed to do a buddy read of You and Hidden Bodies in April, and I am beyond excited. Apparently Joe is MUCH more horrible in the books, but I am sure our love will remain strong.

For those of you who don’t know, You is about a book lover named Joe who works in a bookshop. He meets a woman named Beck who he falls for, ~~slightly~~ totally stalks until she falls for him, and basically he ends up…getting murdery…

…I swear he’s totally dreamy.

2. Pet Sematary by Stephen King

Genre: Fiction/Horror/Thriller

I am not a Stephen King fan…mostly because I’ve never read any of his books.

Does that make me a bad bibliophile???

There has been a lot of recent buzz about this book again with the 2019 movie reboot and the various book merch that has been circulating through Bookstagram and Etsy. In one of my most recent rep packages from Twisted Wonderland Perfumery I received a beautiful Pet Sematary inspired enamel pin of Gage and Church.

So naturally I found myself super curious about the book and looked it up. Pet Sematary is basically about a pet cemetery that has strange and eerie aspects. Louis Creed and his family move to Maine (where every fucked up King scenario takes place), and behind their house there is a path that leads to a Pet Sematary where children have buried their pets. Apparently the family’s cat dies and everything pops off from there.

3. Smoke Gets in Your Eyes: And Other Lessons from the Crematory by Caitlin Doughty

Genre: Nonfiction/Autobiography/Death/Science

Now before you get all weird and start looking at me with eyebrows scrunched in concern and pursed lips of disapproval, let me explain.

I’ve always wanted to work in a morgue, and it’s mostly just because of how quiet it would be. I really love hushed voices.

Whispers.

Silence.

And so naturally my weird little gothy book obsessed self is going to scream of excitement when she sees a book like this!

Smoke gets in Your Eyes is the story of Caitlin Doughty’s first cremation job at WestWind Cremation and Burial in Oakland, CA at the age of 23. The book documents her time there and how she learned the ropes at this unconventional job. It is said to be funny, full of information, and gives the reader a new outlook on the dead in general. And obviously that book title is genius.

So I don’t know about you, but I feel like I’ve found my true genre of book. ❤

4. Words in Deep Blue by Cath Crowley

Genre: YA/Contemporary/Romance

These last three books I also bought today, but via Ebay because DAMN were they a deal!

But since I have fallen into a deep, dark, sobbing, soul incinerating black hole of heartbreaking YA contemporary…I was starting to run out so I had to buy more.

I’m a masochist okay? I want alllllllll the painful feels!

Words in Deep Blue is said to be a love story. Aw.

It’s about best friends Henry and Rachel, an inseparable duo. Basically Rachel had feelings for Henry, but Henry was all googly-eyed for someone else. But as Rachel is planning to move away, she decides to confess her love for Henry in a letter that she hides in his favorite book in his family’s book store (MAJOR Aw’s, right?!). Some years go by without any contact, and then she comes back to town where Henry lives and…

…well I don’t know. I need to read it.

5. The Places I’ve Cried in Public by Holly Bourne

Genre: YA/Contemporary/Romance

Ugh. What a great title.

Can you guys even count all the places you’ve cried in public? I wouldn’t even know where to begin!

Anyways. The Places I’ve Cried in Public is about how Amelie and Reese’s relationship ended, and it sounds like it’s going to be a story of abuse and toxic relationships. These are always super dear to my heart so I am beyond ready to get wrecked over this.

6. It Only happens in the Movies by Holly Bourne

Genre: YA/Contemporary/Romance

I am hoping this is going to be one of the most realistic portrayals of romance in YA Contemporary that I’ll be finding, due to the title and the premise.

It Only Happens in the Movies is about a girl named Audrey who begins working at her local cinema to escape her home life, and ends up meeting Harry – a wannabe filmmaker. A romance sparks and they fall fast, but their romance isn’t the fluffy spectacle that is portrayed in the movies. It’s real and difficult and everything nobody likes to talk about.

Binding of Bindings #37: 2019 Book Wrap-Up

2019 was a whirlwind,

full of murder, lies and romantic delights.

Some characters acted regal, and some started fights.

There were cults, secret societies, and courts of tricks and schemes,

there were proper young ladies, hushed voices, and bloodcurdling screams.

Some plots were gentle, some plots were vexing,

some plots were filled with rebellion, and some with magic and hexing.

There were retellings of classics and introductions to new tales,

with characters who crushed our souls and threw our lives off the rails.

But with each new book and world read in 2019,

You can bet 2020 will be anything but serene.

Binding of Bindings #23: June Book Wrap-Up

1. The Evolution of Mara Dyer by Michelle Hodkin

2. The Retribution of Mara Dyer by Michelle Hodkin

I LOVED The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer, which I read at the end of May.

So naturally I sprinted into June on the wispies of young love, murder and supernatural powers – MORE than ready to continue smirking and swooning uncontrollably.

And it was wonderful..

Apart from those shameful moments of Mara turning herself into an Afghan and spewing silly notions like “I was his“.

Honey, you aren’t a rug.

Get control of yourself.

But the series turned out to be wonderful. Even if it did go in a completely RANDOM science fiction direction that I was not expecting. Some of the romance fizzled out a little near the end too, but I still devoured these books like my life depended on it.

3. The Haunted by Denielle Vega

I received The Haunted in a Goodreads Giveaway (shockingly) and was SO excited to get my black painted finger nails all over it!

Danielle Vega is the author of that oober super popular horror series called The Merciless, which I FULLY recommend you go read if you like blindsides and a little paranormal torment in your life.

The Haunted was a classic haunting story about a girl who moves to a new town with her family after a traumatic experience with her ex-boyfriend. But their new house is legendary to the inhabitants of this small-town, and various stories of murders and strange happenings are brought to light.

I liked this book. But did I LOVE it? Eh.

It was a super quick read, and one that will grab your attention and keep you hooked. I just felt the ending was a bit rushed and that it could have been longer.

I was definitely left wanting MORE!

4. My Real Name is Hanna by Tara Lynn Masih

Ready to get your heart ripped out of your chest?

My Real Name is Hanna begins in May of 1941 in Ukraine at the height of Adolf Hitler’s reign. The book documents Hanna and her families journey into hiding as the Germans attempt to make Ukraine “Jew Free”.

It is a work of fiction, but based off a holocaust survivor named Esther Stermer and her extended family along with four other families who survived by hiding in caves for over 500 days.

This book is heavy. This book is devastating.

But it’s begging to be read.

“My last thought, before I say the Shema, is of the young mother Jacob told us about, while he choked on his own tears-a mother who smothered her own child in her winter coat before the shot came, so the child would not feel the bullet.”

5. A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas

(Again)

Okay…

…so maybe it IS the fourth time I’ve read this.

But you can’t blame me!

This book is…this SERIES is…

…it’s…

IT’S EVERYTHING!

In my defense, however, this reread is due to my lovely friend Tove (@fadingfairytale). She had NEVER read it and I have been on her case about starting the series for MONTHS. So she finally started it and MY OH MY, she loved it. OF COURSE!

My other friend Tabz (@literary_consumer) even joined our read, and now it’s turning into a hilarious slew of Instagram stories and even…something else 😉 (hint hint)

If you also haven’t read this series (cauldron forbid) then you MUST! NOWWW!!!!

It an amazing Fantasy Romance series packed with Fae, battles, curses, swoon-worthy high lords, love, heartache and badass females!

Just read it.

6. The Best Lies by Sarah Lyu

If you’re looking for a book that will leave you feeling lost, confused, unsure of your current relationships, angry, sad and utterly devastated…

…you’ve come to the right place.

The Best Lies is about toxic relationships, mental health, obsessive behaviors, manipulation, family dynamics, love, friendship and lies. It is a mystery/thriller but really, it should be categorized in the “Allow me to rip your heart out through your eye sockets“ genre.

This is one of the BEST books I have read in 2019.

Sure the plot sounds simple and straight forward, but it isn’t. This book is complex. There are layers upon layers of intricate stitches, barely visible weaves sewn into the story, minute details and mannerisms applied to each character.

And all of it is so beautifully put together to make this GIANT quilt of…despairing love.

If you don’t read any of these other books, at least read this one.

1. White Rose by Kip Wilson

I started this month out in typical fashion…

…with a gut-punch to the heart.

White Rose is a YA Historical Fiction based on the inspiring true story of Sophie Scholl, who became part of an anti-Nazi resistance group. The group was formed in June of 1942 by a group of University of Munich students who protested the Nazi regime and Hitler, by drafting and distributing political resistance leaflets across Germany.

It is a story of bravery and conviction.

But one of the most beautiful aspects of this story is that it is written entirely in poetry.

It is heartbreaking and daunting, but it will make your heart soar and make you feel happy to know people like this exist in the world.

A REALIZATION

Who are doing
These terrible things.

The ribbon widens,

2. Stars in the Winter Sky by Michael Duda

Michael Duda is one of my FAVORITE authors, and thank the cauldron, he is FINALLY writing a full-length book.

Michael is known for his dark, eerie and somewhat twisted short stories. They each shine a light on human nature, the good and the bad. But his latest short story, Stars in the Winter Sky, comes with a lighter tone.

It is about two women who venture into the woods in search of the Winter Revelers, a group of people that would come once a year to celebrate the Snowfall. But one year, only two people come back, and the others were lost forever.

Just like every Michael Duda’s story, Stars in the Winter Sky will make you think. This tale is beautiful and breathtaking, and definitely worth a read.

3. Killing November (Book 1) by Adriana Mather

This…is where my April went from a fast-paced roller coaster…

to an aimless stumble in the dark.

Killing November wasn’t horrible for me, but it definitely let me down. I had VERY high hopes for this story, I even bought the hardcover on release day (even though I received a copy from Netgalley) because I knew it was a book I was SURE to love.

The story follows November as she arrives at Academy Absconditi, a place for students to train to be assassins and spies. Classes range from Knife Throwing, Poisons and the Art of Deception. But November has no idea why she is at this school, why her father would send her to such a place where every move and conversation is calculated and part of a game. So when dead bodies start turning up around the school, November is forced to learn more about her past and who she really is.

My issue with this story was the main character. She acted like a deer in headlights for 80% of the story, but during a class she would suddenly turn arrogant and pompous. It was such a confusing thing to have her go from timid to annoyingly confident, and back and forth. The romance had a strange pacing, and the entire story was sort of dull.

It was SO hard to get through this book, and it’s definitely the cause of why I didn’t get to read as many books this month as I hoped. Though I am in the minority on my opinion for Killing November, I’m sticking to my guns and my rating.

I mean honestly, 3 stars was generous.

4. Smoke and Key by Kelsey Sutton

SMOKE AND KEY!!!!!!!!!!

It’s dark.

It’s Gothic.

It’s Romantic.

And it’s about dead people.

What more could you ask for?!?

It starts with a young woman waking up in a place of darkness. She learns that she is dead and has fallen out of her grave to a place called Under, a place that is neither Heaven nor Hell. Each inhabitant of Under is named by the possession they wake up with – Key, Smoke, Ribbon, Doll, Journal. But the problem is that nobody can remember their past lives, who they are, or how they died. Except Key. As she starts to regain the memories from her life, she begins to realize there is a much bigger reason for why she and the people of Under are stuck.

Smoke and Key is mysterious, creepy, sad, uplifting, depressing and just downright EVERYTHING! I am STILL so crushed that I can’t dive into this story to wear the corsets and creep around in Under. I am SO in love with this book.

Kelsey Sutton is life.

5. Zombie Dog ( Book 3) by Doug Goodman

My last read of April, and it was a brilliant one!

This is the third book in the Zombie Dog series by Doug Goodman, and BY FAR, my favorite one yet.

The Zombie Dog series follows Angie Graves, who trained Cadaver Dogs to work with the police in searches. But when giant wasps are discovered to be attaching themselves to the heads of corpses, creating zombies, Angie transitions her field to train her dog Murder to be a zombie tracker. This installment follows Angie and Murder as they work in Houston, Ground Zero for the Zombies outbreak.

Zombie Dog is dark, gritty and twisted. I was sweating, I was cringing and I most definitely was flopping around in my chair wishing the horrors would JUST END!

But naturally, above all else, I was obsessed.

I am continually blown away by this author. The amount of detail and passion he puts into his writing is unbelievable. His knowledge screams through the pages, and easily immerses the reader in a world that feels all too real.

It was easy throwing five stars at this book.

Let’s start this post out cheery, shall we?

The Life of Death is about the brooding beauty of bleak.

The soother of sordid slip-ups, sadness and silence.

It is Death, himself.

Or in this case, Death HERSELF.

As Elizabeth is awaiting her sentence to burn at the stake for being a witch, she is visited at her cell by a man who offers her a deal. One that will give her immortality and allow her to escape death, all she needs to do…is become Death itself. She accepts the offer, and begins her life escorting souls over the threshold.

But when she falls in love and tries to end her deal, she is tasked with giving the man who save her 5 lives in exchange for her own.

Sounds AWESOME, right?!

It’s Lord of the Rings meets The Sword in the Stone…and honestly. who doesn’t want that?!

3. Nocturna (A Forgery of Magic, Book 1) by Maya Motayne

Release Date: May 7, 2019

Genre: YA/Fantasy

I mentioned Nocturna previously in my 12 Upcoming Book Releases Gifted By Publishers post two weeks ago, but shhhhh…

You want to hear this again.

It’s about a faceshifter named Finn who is tasked with an impossible mission, and a Prince who is looking for a way to bring his brother back from the dead. Their lives collide in chaos as they unleash a power that could bring the world to an end, unless they can stop it.

This is one I am REALLY looking forward to, and one that gives me tingly vibes of nostalgia to A Face Like Glass and Lysandra from Throne of Glass.

4. Stepsister by Jennifer Donnelly

Release Date: May 14, 2019

Genre: YA/Fantasy/Retelling

Retellings make the world go ’round, ESPECIALLY Cinderella retellings!

We all know the tale of the mean, ugly and dim stepsisters…but come on guys.

Where’s the COMPASSION?!

Stepsister tells the story of Isabelle who has spent her entire life living in the shadow of Cinderella. She has tried to match the beauty and sweetness of Cinderella her entire life, only to chop away pieces of herself in order to become something of desire for others. Surrounded by those who value beauty above all, she feels pushed down and set aside. But when she gets the chance to change her life for the better, she is able to prove just how strong she really is.

I can already tell this isn’t going to be some fluffy Disney retelling. It’s a story of empowerment, self-love and learning to stop trying so DAMN hard to please other people.

I am SO on board.

5. The Living God (Book 1) by Kaytalin Platt

Release Date: May 12, 2019

Genre: YA/Fantasy

Two mages – Saran, a Princess with the ability to manipulate time, and Keleir, a fire mage whose body is the host for a demon and who is foretold to be The Living God. Their two lives become intertwined, and are brought together by fate. But the eventual end of the world is near if Keleir does indeed fulfill the prophecy and become a living God.

The Living God has some pretty great reviews up right now, and I am getting really excited to read it. It sounds like a super exciting fantasy that definitely sounds unique.

6. The Confessions of Frannie Langton by Sara Collins

Release Date: May 21, 2019

Genre: Historical Fiction/Mystery

This Historical Fiction/Mystery is a story of suppression, love, social norms and of course…murder.

Set in 1826, Frannie Langton is being tried for the murder of her former employers whom she worked as a maid for. In a world where she is thrust down for her race and classification, Frannie recounts her story of what really happened.

From the reviews I have read so far, this story sounds like it is going to be a sorrowful mystery that will grab your attention!

7. The Bone Charmer by Breeana Shields

Release Date: May 21, 2019

Genre: YA/Fantasy

In Saskia’s world, there are multiple types of bone magic, and one’s she desires more than others. But when Saskia is assigned to train as a Bone Charmer, which is the same as her mother, and a love reading matches her with an undesirable boy, she is split between a life she wishes for and a life she is foretold to have.

I found the premise for this story to be really interesting, and am hoping it has a dark and gritty feeling to it. I love a bit of magic, so hopefully this will turn out to be a winner!

Plus, I am getting completely lost in that COVER!

8. The Missing Season by Gillian French

Release Date: May 21, 2019

Genre: YA/Mystery

When Clara moves to the broken-down town of Pender, all anyone ever seems to talk about is the Mumbler – a monster that lives in the marshes and steals children on Halloween night. As Clara becomes attracted to a group of misfits who are love to weave the frightening tale, Clara knows that it is all just imaginary. Isn’t it?

I feel like this story can go a MILLION different ways, and I am so curious to see where French takes this story.

Is there actually a monster? Is one of the kids going around killing people?? Does it have NOTHING to do with the Mumbler?!

Time will tell.

9. Stay Sexy & Don’t Get Murdered: The Definitive How-To Guide by Karen Kilagariff and Georgia Hardstark

Release Date: May 14, 2019

Genre: Nonfiction/Crime/Autobiography

This isn’t a crime novel, it’s a self-help book.

The authors, Karen and Georgia, have a well-known podcast called My Favorite Murder where the two women discuss murders and relate it to everyday life.

Confused? So was I.

Basically this book, and their podcast, is about staying alive and how to do it flawlessly. The authors share personal stories and experiences that range from depression and eating disorders, to how to live happily and be the best version of yourself.

If you’ve heard the podcast, I know you’re 100% ready for this. But if you haven’t, I suggest jumping in and enjoying the comical musings of these two ladies who are OBSESSED with murders.

The Kingdom is basically a virtual theme park similar to Ready Player One (hopefully you have read the book or seen the movie) where there are virtual creatures, extravagant buildings and you can do anything you want.

Ana is a robot princess, one of seven Fantasists who are created to bring your dreams to fruition. Though human emotions and feelings aren’t made up in Ana’s code, she suddenly falls for a guy named Owen. But when Owen is found murdered, Ana is blamed and put on trial.

If you are a gamer like me, then you are probably doing a happy dance for the release of this book. It’s my favorite fantasy elements mixed with gaming, strange creatures, a mystery and the never-ending psychological question of “what makes a human, human?”.
